Cybersecurity is the main component of a country’s overall national security and economic security strategies.
FREMONT, CA: Standing in a cybersecurity crossroad, choosing which path to take is confusing. Generally, the unrelenting nature of cyberattacks makes people insecure. It is equally problematic for smaller and mid-sized organizations to be able to combat adversaries and embrace the fight. Government organizations, such as all the enterprises, have to operate with a “not if, but when” thought process. The organizations have to deliver their best to compensate the basics such as patch management, vulnerability management, and data backup as well to ensure that people, technologies, and processes are in a line to detect, prevent, and respond to threats.
The three fundamental steps to be taken to up the cybersecurity game are discussed in the following.
Secure More budget
There was a significant rise in the transparency of cyberattacks with the 2014 breach disclosure requirements. One such result stated a symbolic increase in the cybersecurity budgets. Currently, the awareness of the increasing need for cybersecurity in the state and local government has not seen demand as higher as of now, and the organizations should be able to leverage this opportunity to argue for more budget.
Cybersecurity is a Business Risk
In terms of state and local government, the transition of viewing cybersecurity as a business risk against IT risk is noticed in the early stages. This aspect is the critical element for the state and local government cybersecurity organizations, and it makes the argument for a higher budget stronger. The cyberattacks on the state and local governments have been to create business disruption via ransomware rather than settling sensitive data. The service availability, over time, and revenue is becoming a more sensitive topic with constituents.
Outsource, Automate and Use Threat Intelligence
When we talk about finding and retaining skilled security staff, state and local government organizations have to combat sever pressures related to the commercial sector. Addressing to a staff shortage in the commercial industry is a massive shift towards managed security services.
To adapt security automation is also critical to scaling security efforts. It is essential for organizations to operate without the fear of a cyberattack and grasp the challenge instead.
