Fremont, CA The United States produces roughly 236 million tons of waste per year, according to a Waste Atlas report from the University of Leeds. North America is followed by Russia, which has roughly 207 million tons of waste, Japan, which has 52 million tons, Germany, which has 48, and the United Kingdom, which has 34 million tons of waste. These numbers demonstrate that waste collection is one of the most serious issues that cities throughout the world experience. Not only because of the logistics, but also because of the environmental impact that improper handling of these products might have.
Importance of waste management
Smart and sustainable waste management has a direct impact on the environment, community health, and delivers economic benefits for both businesses and government agencies through cost savings. In recent years, countries such as Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Belgium, and the Netherlands have welcomed this management model, almost eradicating their dumping sites and, with them, associated processes such as garbage burning and gas emission into the environment. Even though garbage must be burned as part of the recovery process, if this is done within a sustainable management system, CO2 emissions entering the atmosphereare reduced by nineteen times compared to traditional disposal sites.
How to practice sustainable waste management
Sustainable waste management is a relatively new idea that aims to combine consumer products production with environmental and natural resource respect. As a result, commodities must be manufactured in such a way that they produce the least amount of waste feasible during the manufacturing process. If they must be manufactured, they should preferably be able to be used for various purposes, both in the industrial and household sectors. If this isn't practicable, the product should be made from recyclable materials. Finally, the recovery concept, which has only recently been introduced into this field, allows waste management to be viewed as a source of revenue by considering waste as an asset that can be converted into other assets.
