FREMONT, CA:In the current political climate, police and law enforcement training academies are increasingly looking for new ways to deliver training and courses that take into account the rapidly changing policing needs of recent years, rather than repeating past mistakes by using the same methods developed in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Law enforcement academies, in particular, are increasingly focusing on employing VR training technology to encourage on-the-job skills, attitudes, and knowledge that will help them achieve and exceed customer service, public order, and the highest ethical goals.
VR simulations are becoming a more viable and promising training technology for public safety personnel. In an environment where conventional instructional methods are struggling to meet the needs of learners in the twenty-first-century workforce, VR could be an opportunity to fill that gap. There have been numerous studies and research papers demonstrating VR's ability to meet training goals, including the ability to deliver realistic simulations of realistic scenarios. One police academy training simulator, for example, is being utilized by law enforcement academies all around the country to teach future cops for the following events and situations:
• Implicit bias incidents.
• Situations requiring de-escalation.
• Using coercion to make decisions.
• Situations requiring crisis intervention.
• Active shooter situations.
The Role of VR in Improving Policing and Performance
VR can also be employed in the training of police academies. When using VR for training purposes, such use would improve the results that may be obtained. According to various studies, VR training could be even more relevant than using this same technology to refine the learning of new technical skills. The usage of VR training platforms can help police personnel improve their long-term cognitive function.Although VR use in law enforcement academies is not yet ubiquitous, VR technology will enable new performance levels in police training academies when used appropriately. Furthermore, by utilizing VR, police academies will be able to increase the skills that students will learn and their psychological and emotional well-being.
