FREMONT, CA: The advancement of technology gives governments the opportunity to transform their services by implementing e-Government systems. Governments can improve efficiency and accessibility while cutting costs by effectively leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT). However, several challenges must be addressed to ensure the successful development and delivery of these e-Government services. This article explores the barriers and issues associated with IoT-enabled AI applications for e-Government and suggests strategies to overcome them.
IoT-enabled AI applications consist of various components, including sensor systems, communication networks, and data storage and processing devices. Ensuring interoperability between these components and other governmental apps is crucial for seamless integration and effective service delivery. Moreover, individuals may be unaware of the collected data, its storage and management, and who has access to it. Lack of transparency can undermine personal liberties and erode trust. Resolving data ownership, governance, and analysis conflicts is essential to address these challenges and protect data security and privacy.
IoT-enabled AI systems consume significant energy due to data gathering, storage, and analysis processes. The growth of internet traffic and the increasing use of IoT contribute to rising energy consumption. Governments must prioritize energy management and explore strategies to improve energy efficiency in these systems. Emphasizing sustainable practices and adopting energy-efficient technologies can help mitigate the environmental impact of IoT-enabled AI applications.
The deployment of AI in e-Government services introduces ethical dilemmas. For instance, autonomous vehicles must prioritize minimizing harm, even when different choices may affect the well-being of passengers or other road users. Medical robots raise concerns about responsibility and the potential harm caused by incorrect directives. Governments must establish frameworks and guidelines to address these ethical challenges and ensure the responsible and accountable use of AI applications in e-Government services.
Governments must overcome various challenges to harness the full potential of IoT-enabled AI applications in e-Government services. Interoperability, sustainability, data security, privacy, energy efficiency, and ethical considerations are among the key areas that require attention. By addressing these barriers, governments can realize the transformative benefits of IoT-enabled AI applications, benefiting the administration and the citizens they serve.
