Police forensics is being transformed by six technological advancements. It includes touch DNA for rapid analysis, drones for real-time video gathering, aerial surveillance for officer safety, Google Glass for information gathering, facial recognition software for real-time information, immunochromatography for sexual assault investigations, and fingerprint protection for improved accuracy.
Fremont, CA: Police forensics, a field often linked to TV shows like CSI, is being reimagined by six significant technological advancements, transforming the way crimes are processed, resembling the approach seen on TV.
Touch DNA
Police can now obtain "touch DNA" from objects touched by a suspect, revolutionizing forensic investigations. This technology allows investigators to gather DNA evidence from previously inaccessible objects, increasing the chances of identifying and linking suspects to crime scenes. This breakthrough is beneficial in cases where traditional DNA samples may be scarce or contaminated.
Portable Testing Units
Advances in DNA analysis have enabled rapid tests on DNA in as little as 90 minutes using portable testing units. These compact units can be easily transported to crime scenes, allowing investigators to quickly analyze DNA samples on-site. It not only saves time but also prevents further crimes by suspects, enabling law enforcement agencies to take immediate action and potentially prevent other crimes.
Drones
Drones are revolutionizing police forensics by providing high-definition video from high altitudes, enabling law enforcement to gather real-time information during riots or protests. These recordings are crucial for court proceedings and provide situational awareness, allowing for informed decision-making. Additionally, aerial surveillance allows for access to inaccessible or hazardous areas, enhancing officer safety during critical operations. Overall, drones are improving the efficiency of police forensics.
Google Glass
Google Glass, a popular public technology, is being developed for law enforcement to record surroundings and search for information. When connected to facial recognition software, officers can access real-time information about anyone they meet, improving efficiency and crime prevention. However, concerns about privacy and misuse have been raised, necessitating regulation and ethical considerations. The integration of Google Glass could significantly enhance law enforcement operations.
Immunochromatography
A new forensic technology is being developed to aid investigations into sexual assault cases by testing blood samples to determine if they are natural blood or injury-related. It reduces response time and workload on regional forensic centers, allowing investigators to prioritize pieces with crucial DNA evidence, expedite perpetrator identification, and provide justice for victims. The technology also optimizes resources and increases efficiency in handling sexual assault cases.
Fingerprint protection
A new fingerprint extraction technique has been developed to preserve crucial evidence from crime scenes submerged in water, exposed to high temperatures, or deformed. This advancement in fingerprint technology enhances the accuracy and reliability of fingerprint analysis, allowing forensic experts to gather vital information even in challenging scenes. It also strengthens law enforcement's ability to identify and apprehend perpetrators in sexual assault cases.
