Security is high on the agenda for national technical concerns, with state-on-state cyberattacks developing in tandem with criminal cyberattacks.
FREMONT, CA: Like any other aspect of society, governments and public authorities are prone to technological disruption. Many of the issues governments face today derive from the global Covid-19 pandemic. Frequently, government institutions discovered that adopting techniques and strategies comparable to those used by industry and the private sector may learn to be more flexible in their reaction. As a result, the government has witnessed a faster rate of digital change. Artificial intelligence (AI), the internet of things (IoT), and digital twins are now firmly on the agenda of governments and public entities. Many governments, particularly those in more developed countries, have realized that they can no longer afford to be complacent when there is so much potential for positive change.
Digital Identity of users
In this digital age, an individual's identity plays a significant role in proving who they are to the government. Many nations have created centralized systems for checking criminal records and confirming rights to government assistance such as healthcare and subsidies. Other governments have gone even further by instituting mandatory or voluntary national identification cards. Furthermore, identity schemes may or may not contain biometric measures such as fingerprints to link an individual's physical identity to their digital identity.
AI and Public Service Automation
As governments and authorities explore ways to automate public services, chatbots are one example of an AI-powered application. Natural language processing (NLP) technology is being used by federal, state, and local governments in the United States to reduce customer friction. They were popular among services that received massive calls during the pandemic. The Office of the Revenue Commissioners in the Republic of Ireland developed an AI-powered virtual assistant that provides 24/7 assistance to citizens seeking to submit their tax forms.
The rise of government technology startups
The government is not typically known for its agility and ingenuity in developing new technology. As a result, a new breed of a startup known as "govtechs" has emerged to tackle the problem of driving the digital revolution in government agencies. With government technology adoption having the ability to touch many aspects of our lives, it's encouraging to see that innovation is flourishing here and in more traditionally lucrative industries like financial technology (fintech) and marketing technology (martech).
Cryptocurrencies
The number of governments attempting to link cryptocurrencies with their central banking systems continues to rise. More countries are anticipated to create their digital currencies in the future. These have the advantage of remaining under the jurisdiction of the issuing governments while providing many of the infrastructure benefits of existing cryptocurrencies, such as the lack of a need for bank accounts to store them or payment systems to spend them.
