In public safety, AI can aid in the automation of tasks such as facial recognition, resource management, and the detection of behavioral patterns.
FREMONT, CA: From firefighters and 911 call takers to EMTs and police officers, the public safety community has dealt with several new and old concerns in 2020. They have stepped up to keep the communities safe, whether they had to wear a mask and keep their distance or solve a problem over Zoom. First responders use many tools that harness the newest advancements in technology and data to assist them in dealing with a quickly changing world. Find below the biggest public safety tech trends in 2021.
Artificial Intelligence and Biotechnology
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has dominated discussions across a wide range of businesses. In public safety, AI can aid in the automation of tasks such as facial recognition, resource management, and the detection of behavioral patterns. Apart from policing, AI may assist 911 call takers by providing them with additional information about an emergency, allowing them to respond to calls more effectively. Companies employ AI to detect weapons in commercial and public space CCTV and security camera footage. Through the emergency response data platform, this information can be relayed directly to 911, allowing first responders to reach the scene sooner and better prepared.

Vertical Location For 911 Callers
Previously, the 911 system could only receive the location information that callers could vocally provide over the phone. The inclusion of vertical, or Z-axis, location data to emergency location acquisition in 2021 will result in huge benefits. The vertical location provides more than just latitude and longitude; it also shows a caller's relative height and positioning of first responders. This is especially useful when callers are inside a structure, and first responders need to figure out the room, floor, or area they are in.
Optimized Disaster Response and Resilience
Against all obstacles, the public safety community has repeatedly risen to the occasion to respond to terrible disasters. From wildfires in the West to the widespread COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 has seen its fair share of national disasters. However, as the pandemic continues, it is evident that public safety infrastructure must become more resilient in the face of such large-scale problems. As the number of 911 calls increases, staffing levels are at an all-time low, necessitating the implementation of systems, protocols, and technology to assure continuity and resilience. One can expect resilience to be at the center of public safety discussions as the world recovers from the upheaval of 2020.
