Leading from a Coach’s Mindset
Ed Althof
My leadership style is rooted in a coaching mindset shaped by my background as an elite athlete. The techniques used to motivate teams, develop individual strengths and foster resilience have had a lasting impact on how I lead.
In terms of technology strategy, an early mentor taught me the value of “coming from a place of yes.” Rather than dismissing ideas or requirements, especially in conversations with clients, stakeholders and partners, I seek to understand their goals and constraints. Although not every request is feasible due to cost, risk or complexity, working through the problem collaboratively often produces practical, mutually beneficial solutions. In the public sector, where consensus and partnership are essential, this approach has been critical.
That mindset carries into how I build teams. The most impactful lessons I’ve learned center on teamwork, communication, trust and collaboration. Much like a high‑performing sports team, success in technology requires everyone working toward a shared goal and contributing to collective outcomes. Individual talent is valuable, but no single contributor can carry an organization through sustained change. My athletic experience taught me how teams overcome challenges together, and I often share those lessons to build a culture of resilience, adaptability and shared ownership within my teams.
Balancing Innovation, Scalability and Security
Security has become more important than ever, serving as the foundation for reliable operations and minimizing organizational risk. While innovation is a driving force for modernization, it must be pursued with scalability in mind so solutions can support both enterprise-wide needs and the distinct requirements of individual departments.
Serving more than 22 County agencies, each with unique missions and operational needs, requires maintaining flexibility while upholding consistent standards and policies. Achieving the right balance depends on having an enterprise-level perspective, encouraging open‑minded collaboration, and ensuring that transformative initiatives remain aligned with our broader security and performance expectations.
Preparing for What’s Next
Artificial Intelligence (AI), while not new, is rapidly reshaping the way we work and live. Its benefits are significant, but realizing those benefits responsibly requires strong governance, thoughtful policy and clear guardrails—both within the enterprise and in personal use.
We are also seeing broad consolidation within the industry, as companies combine technologies and capabilities in ways that will ultimately clarify how AI can be harnessed for positive, sustainable outcomes. At the same time, AI is increasingly being exploited by bad actors, underscoring the urgency of security‑minded implementation and continuous vigilance.
My advice is to study the evolution of technology and understand not only the tools but also the people who build, rely on and benefit from them. Developing strong emotional intelligence and learning the business side of IT are essential components of effective leadership.
Be a lifelong learner. Read widely, stay curious and invest in both personal and professional growth. The leaders who thrive are those who continually improve themselves and inspire others to do the same. Strive to be the best at getting better.
