Tools such as Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) software and vehicle recognition systems can be utilized to create a contactless and efficient type of policing that can assist agencies in managing their budgetary realities while keeping their officers and communities safe for all.
FREMONT, CA : In many cities, efforts to defund the police exacerbate the problems that many law enforcement agencies are already dealing with due to decreased resources and a limited number of officers. It is now, more than ever, time for municipalities and local police departments to start thinking about methods to make policing more efficient.
Local police departments can benefit from using the correct technology as they deal with these developing concerns. Tools such as Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) software and vehicle recognition systems can be utilized to create a contactless and efficient type of policing that can assist agencies in managing their budgetary realities while keeping their officers and communities safe for all.
Searching for Vehicles, Not People
Vehicle recognition technology reads license plate numbers and detects vehicle makes, models, colors, and other characteristics using strategically placed cameras. When the system detects a hit–for example, a plate number that is on a department’s ‘hot list’ of vehicles reported stolen or involved in a crime–an officer can be summoned to approach the vehicle when it comes to a stop, avoiding a high-speed chase or possibly deadly confrontation. Because the technology is centered on the vehicle, it precludes the possibility of ‘profiling’ based on race, gender, age, religion, or personal political beliefs. It simply gives police an investigative lead related to a vehicle of interest and the opportunity to advance to the next step of an investigation more effectively.
Building Bridges
While individuals may raise concerns when vehicle recognition systems are first adopted, they frequently become staunch supporters of the program once the department discusses and publicizes the system’s success in apprehending suspects and solving crimes. Transparency and clear communication regarding vehicle identification programs and rules can reassure citizens that the objective is to keep police and communities safe while safeguarding citizens’ privacy rights.
Local police departments are already overburdened. They require solutions to help them manage the issues they face while also connecting with their communities. The right tools can assist agencies in making gains toward managing tightening budgets while remaining true to their pledge to ‘serve and protect.’
