Key factors that help in building a smart city are intelligent transport, climate adaption management, and smart lighting. Smart cities will positively impact the lifestyle of the people. New York can be an excellent example for smart cities, the concept received an ample amount of attention, and now it plays a vital role in the state’s growth. According to IESE Cities in motion index, the New York City was declared as smartest city in the world.
Smart cities make use of communication and information technology to maximize operational efficiency and create a welfare state for citizens but, Technology is a significant factor in Smart City Solutions, most of the companies are not prepared for the digital transformation. City planners must consider various aspects like quality of life, sustainability, and economic competitiveness before implementing any solutions because the solution implemented must align with the organization’s strategy only then the desired output can be obtained.
A cross-organizational public partnership will help in formulating potential initiatives to solve problems that span across various sectors. The basic problem with organizations is they don’t recognize the need for a strategy. To devise and implement an initiative the organization must work with key public sector players to identify the requirements and problem areas, only then the initiative will possess value. Every initiative must undergo a feasibility study to examine the social and economic effects that can be achieved.
The study prior to implementing solutions will help in identifying relevant partnership in academia and the private sector to make sure that value creating synergies are exploited. The partnership will provide the organization experience and knowledge; it can also cover aspects like operations, financing, and maintenance of the end-product of an initiative. Business cases will allow the partners to use business cases to identify technological and conceptual solutions. Finally, the initiatives must include relevant groups of citizens to ensure vital inputs are picked up. From a feasibility study, inputs from citizens, and business cases, the organization can now find realizable benefits in digital transformation.
