Civic engagement is essential for government and citizens to stay connected and informed for a better society.
FREMONT, CA: Governments unite the people by enforcing laws and achieving common goals. Many different types of governments exist, with some being more successful than others. No matter what type of government an organization belongs to, such as a local government, the values that govern its actions and the actions of its citizens change constantly. The participation of citizens in the development process can facilitate the efficient provision of services, meet the needs of citizens, and ensure equity.
There are many ways to engage in civic engagement, including voting, political activism, volunteering, and community involvement. Participation in civic activities is fundamental, as it enables citizens to influence policy, local values, and the priorities of local governments at all levels. Consequently, as a result of this change, trust is increased, communities are stronger and happier, and residents are able to participate in decisions where they are often underrepresented.
How does civic participation benefit society?
There can never be enough emphasis placed on civic involvement. Participation in civic activities beyond voting can positively impact local governments. The program benefits the resident in many other forms than just the government entity that serves them directly.
Engaged residents participate more in civic activities in their local communities. The benefits of civic participation include better governance, mental health, and better mental health. All residents gain empowerment through civic participation, and government leaders learn about residents' needs. Residents from different communities participate and understand each other, increasing equity and inclusion.
The younger generation is encouraged to understand and participate in their government through many programs. Keeping the flame of citizen engagement alive for all ages requires the involvement of all generations.

What are the challenges of civic participation?
There is a lot of polarization in our society today. Citizens lose faith and trust in government because of this polarization. The situation appears hopeless, and nothing will ever change. Walking away becomes easier than engaging.
Modern society makes it difficult to distinguish between role models and those speaking loudly. Younger generations won't necessarily understand civic engagement without role models. Skills such as empathy, listening, leading, and being physically present in our cities and communities are essential for civic participation. We focus more on technology than communication.
With all the information available daily, there's no time to sort through it and determine what's most valuable. A good understanding of your local community is key to civic participation.
Students' formal education in government and civics ends in high school when they take a civics class. Participation, voting, and volunteering can be unclear and intimidating for residents. Communication between cities and counties is key to keeping residents informed about what is happening.
