September - 20186GOVERNMENT CIO OUTLOOKEDITORIALAI: Empowering the Government AI's potential benefits for government are slowly beginning to become more evident. The "smart" technology is making the government, smarter. For starters, cognitive applications are reducing backlogs and cutting costs while handling tasks humans are incapable of efficiently doing, such as predicting fraudulent transactions. Developers are further trying to leverage AI-based applications, to transform the public sector by automating tasks. With that being said, agencies will need to decide between some work being fully automated, combining the strengths of humans and machines, or performed by people and enhanced by computers. Because, automation can play a crucial role in freeing up federal working hours annually. However, the question lies in which functions to start with. Many everyday examples can help paint a better picture of this. The function of the US Postal Service which uses handwriting recognition to sort mail by ZIP code is performed by some machines that can process 18,000 pieces of mail an hour. Another excellent example of humans and computers combining their strengths for a purpose is IBM's Watson for Oncology. It recommends individual cancer treatments to physicians, alongside providing the evidence and a confidence score for each recommendation, helping them make more fully informed decisions. But during the transformation, government agencies should consider their priorities--costs involved and the value that is brought about. At this interesting juncture, our distinguished selection panel comprising CEOs, CIOs, CFOs, industry analysts, and Govt CIO Outlook's editorial board have thoroughly analyzed the industry and recognized the key players.
