March-20166GOVERNMENT CIO OUTLOOKEDITORIALKeeping Cyber Risks in CheckSecurity breaches hit the government agencies hard last year. Attempts to hack Hillary Clinton's private email server continually made headlines and data beaches at the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) compromised the personal information of the entire federal community. This has spurred the local, state, and federal governments to make their technology initiatives more open, responsive, and--most importantly--secure.The priorities for government IT differ from enterprise IT. Government computing has to accomplish everything that is expected of a complex organization, including long-term strategic planning while coping with day-to-day security vulnerabilities. The breach of OPM radically changed how IT security is looked at--from being something only security professionals cared about previously. From expanding multifactor authentication to the entire workforce; increasing cyber awareness, including staged phishing expeditions to identify vulnerable staff; and setting up protective policies, the alarms set off by last year's breach will continue wailing in 2016. While the first line of defense remains the same--well configured devices, firewall, and rigorous password policies--a shift to block-chain encryption is also expected. While beefing up the security is paramount, there are a few niggles that tag along with it--the decline in ease of use and simplicity. According to Digital Risk Management Institute, customer experience executives will soon find cyber security daunting. There is, however, light at the end of the tunnel. Not all security firms are bent on bolstering the security alone and ignoring user-friendliness. There are firms that strive to strike the right balance between the two.On that note, Government CIO Outlook presents to you a special edition on security solutions, featuring insights from security experts around the world. We hope the technology solutions covered in this issue will help revamp your security practices.Let us know your thoughts.Copyright © 2016 Valley Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
