June - 20196GOVERNMENT CIO OUTLOOKEDITORIALTech-Savvy Governments for the Millennial CitizenThe millennial citizen is in, and with that, there is the prevalence of information and communication technology; most governments have realized the imperative which is to bring in e-governance. The objective of e-governance solutions goes beyond digitalization of back-office operations and involves how a government operates on the foundational level, and this signifies a new set of responsibilities for the executive, legislature, and also the citizenry. As in the case of the recent decade, cloud computing technology will be a mainstay in e-governance solutions this year. Hosting data on the cloud answers the needs of scalability and remote accessibility. Easier and more cost-effective to maintain, the cloud remains a fortified haven for confidential information to be stored and managed, away from data loss, theft, and virus intrusion. No conversation about the cloud is complete without a mention of big data. The government sector for its part is focusing on big data as it enables institutions to make decisions taking into account large-scale analyses. More broadly, big data aids decision-making through the discovery of patterns in large data sets based on facts or observations. Meanwhile, the room for adopting AI to automate the labyrinth of operations is on a high; however, there is a setback when it comes to the readiness of government organizations. This is mainly due to a fear of losing jobs to machines. Nevertheless, governments have started to realize that automation and AI will only liberate resources from doing monotonous and repetitive duties and assign them on more crucial tasks. There are many changes underway on a vast scale, with digitalization transforming economies, governments, and societies in complex, interrelated, and often, unpredictable ways. While some government policies and practices have not kept up with the speed of change, there are some at the edge of innovation, using novel solutions to solve today's challenges. In this edition of Govt CIO Outlook, we feature companies that have attained rich expertise in delivering e-governance solutions that exhibit high standards of usability, flexibility, scalability, and security.
